John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2025

What this bill does

AI plain-language summary

This bill creates new rules for when states and local areas must get approval from the federal government before changing their voting laws. If a state has had 15 or more voting rights violations in the past 25 years, or meets other violation thresholds, then that state and its local areas must get permission from the Justice Department or a federal court before making voting changes for 10 years. Local areas can also be required to get permission separately if they have had 3 or more violations in 25 years. The bill also requires these areas to tell the public about voting changes and gives the Justice Department power to ask for documents and answers about voting rights enforcement.
