Default Proceed Sale Transparency Act

What this bill does

AI plain-language summary

When someone tries to buy a gun from a licensed dealer, a background check is run. Under current law, if that background check isn't finished within three business days, the sale can go through anyway — this is called a "default-proceed" transaction. This bill would require dealers to report these sales to the FBI within 24 hours, and it would require the background check system to make finishing those checks a priority and keep records until the check is done. The bill also requires the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to publicly share data about these types of transactions.
