Legal Workforce Act

This bill requires the Department of Homeland Security to create a new electronic system to replace E-Verify, which employers use to check if workers are legally allowed to work in the United States. Currently, only some employers must use E-Verify, but this bill would require all employers to use the new system. The bill sets rules for what documents workers must show and gives employers protection from lawsuits if they rely on the system in good faith. It increases penalties for employers who hire people without work authorization and prevents states from making their own laws about employment verification, though states can still use business licensing to punish employers who don't follow the rules.
