GOSAFE Act

This bill creates new rules around a type of firearm called a gas-operated semiautomatic firearm. It would generally make it illegal to import, sell, make, transfer, receive, or possess these firearms, as well as parts that can modify guns to work this way or increase how fast they fire. It would also generally ban the import, sale, manufacture, transfer, or receipt of large capacity ammunition feeding devices, and ban possessing any such devices made after the bill becomes law. People who break these rules could face fines or up to 12 months in prison, and anyone caught with one of these prohibited firearms while committing a federal felony would face at least two years in prison. The bill also allows state and local governments to use certain federal grant money to set up buy-back programs where people can turn in these firearms and devices for compensation.
