Safer Shrimp Imports Act

What this bill does

AI plain-language summary

This bill would stop shrimp from being imported into the United States from countries that don't have food safety inspection systems as strong as the FDA's system for checking shrimp. The FDA would be required to try to make agreements with countries that have facilities handling shrimp sent to the U.S., so the FDA can inspect those facilities. If a country doesn't make an agreement with the FDA or doesn't have an equivalent inspection system — including rules about how shrimp are raised and transported — then shrimp from that country would be considered unsafe and couldn't be sold in the United States.
