Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Recognition and Compensation Act

This bill would allow five Alaska Native communities in Southeast Alaska to form special corporations and receive land from the federal government. The communities are Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee, and Wrangell. The Department of the Interior would give specific land to each corporation, and the underground rights to that land would go to the regional corporation for Southeast Alaska. The land would include roads, trails, and other facilities on it. Each corporation could also set up a trust to help with health, education, and welfare for community members and to preserve Alaska Native heritage and culture.
