Lumbee Fairness Act

This bill would officially recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina as a federally recognized tribe. Once recognized, Lumbee Tribe members would become eligible for the same services and benefits that other federally recognized tribes receive. The federal government would work with the tribe to figure out what services are needed for tribe members living in four specific North Carolina counties. The bill also allows the federal government to hold land in trust for the tribe, while North Carolina would continue to handle legal matters on tribal lands unless the tribe and state agree to change that arrangement.
