Supplemental Security Income Equality Act

This bill would allow people living in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is a federal program that helps older, blind, and disabled people with low income cover their basic needs. Right now, people in these territories cannot get SSI benefits. The bill also removes limits on how much money these territories can receive from certain aid programs, like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and it makes clear that non-citizen U.S. nationals, such as people born in American Samoa, can qualify for SSI the same way U.S. citizens can.
