GRAS Act

This bill changes the rules for how food ingredients are approved in the United States. Right now, if experts agree a substance added to food is "generally recognized as safe," companies can use it without getting approval from the Food and Drug Administration, and they don't even have to tell the FDA about it. Under this bill, companies would have to notify the FDA before using any new substance considered safe, provide evidence that it is not toxic or cancer-causing, and wait for the FDA to respond in writing saying it has no objections. The bill also requires the FDA to regularly re-check the safety of ingredients already being used in food and sets up fees for these reviews.
