21st Century Dyslexia Act

This bill changes how dyslexia is handled in federal education law. Right now, dyslexia is grouped under a broad category called "specific learning disability," but this bill would take it out of that group and give it its own separate definition. The bill defines dyslexia as an unexpected difficulty with reading in someone who is smart enough to read much better, usually caused by trouble processing the individual sounds in spoken language. The bill also requires schools and agencies to make sure children from low-income families and children who have limited English skills get equal access to services and support under the law.
