Urban Canal Modernization Act

This bill gives the Bureau of Reclamation, a federal agency that manages water infrastructure in western states, more responsibility to fix and maintain aging canals that run through or near cities and towns. It focuses on canals that could cause loss of life or property damage if they were to fail. The federal government would be required to cover 35% of the cost of major repair and maintenance work for these urban canals and certain other water facilities near populated areas. The bill also says that any costs paid back by local entities can count as non-federal funding when applying for other federal grants that require cost-sharing.
