Next Generation 9–1–1 Act

This bill creates a grant program to help state, tribal, and local governments upgrade their 911 emergency systems to newer internet-based technology called "next generation 911." These new systems can do things the old phone-based systems cannot, like finding your location better and receiving text messages and photos. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration would give out the grants to pay for building and maintaining these new systems, training staff, cybersecurity protection, and public education. To get a grant, governments must submit a plan showing how their new system will work with others and stay secure, and they must promise to find ongoing funding to keep the system running.
