GRAS Oversight and Transparency Act

This bill would require the FDA to set up a special board to look back at decisions food manufacturers made before the year 2000 about which ingredients they considered safe to put in food. Right now, companies can decide on their own that certain substances are safe without telling the FDA, but this bill would make manufacturers hand over a list of those decisions so the board can review them. If the board finds that a substance hasn't been shown to be safe, it can recommend that the FDA take away that substance's safe status, and the FDA would then have to set up a process to stop the substance from being sold in food. The bill would automatically end 10 years after it becomes law.
