Shut Down Sanctuary Policies Act of 2026

This bill requires state and local governments to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement and prohibits them from limiting their employees' ability to enforce immigration laws or ask about someone's immigration status. It requires the Department of Homeland Security to issue detainers — requests to hold someone — for people arrested for criminal or driving offenses if there is probable cause they are in the country illegally or subject to deportation. State and local governments that do not follow these rules would lose certain law enforcement and immigration funding, which would then be redirected to governments that do comply. The bill also allows crime victims to sue state or local governments that released someone despite a federal request to hold them, and it gives legal protections to officials who follow the bill's requirements.
