SAFE Act

This bill permanently makes all fentanyl-related substances illegal drugs under the highest level of control, called schedule I. These substances are currently banned temporarily until March 2025, but this bill would make the ban permanent. The bill reduces some prison penalties for certain fentanyl crimes and creates a way to remove specific fentanyl substances from the ban if they are found to have low abuse potential. It also makes it easier for researchers to study these substances and requires a government study on how this permanent ban affects things.
