Protect our Pets Act

This bill increases the punishments for animal crushing, which includes intentionally crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, or impaling living animals. Right now, someone convicted of this can face up to seven years in prison, but this bill raises that to up to 10 years for a first offense and up to 15 years for a second offense. The bill also creates a new federal crime for knowingly abandoning a pet or committing violence that puts a pet in danger, with the same penalties. There are exceptions for things like slaughtering animals for food, medical or scientific research, protecting a person's life or property, and euthanizing an animal.
