DERAIL Act

This bill changes the rules about which trains are considered "high-hazard flammable trains" that must follow extra safety requirements. Currently, a train needs to carry 20 or more tank cars of flammable liquids in a row, or 35 or more spread throughout the train, to be classified this way. The bill would change this so that any train carrying even one tank car of flammable liquids or gases would be considered high-hazard and subject to additional safety rules. The bill also requires railroad companies to report train derailments involving toxic materials to federal, state, local, and tribal officials within 24 hours.
