Physicians for Underserved Areas Act

This bill changes the rules for what happens to medical training positions when a hospital with a medical residency program closes. Currently, Medicare gives these positions to other hospitals in a specific order: first to hospitals in the same local area, then the same state, then the same region of the country, and finally to any remaining hospitals. The bill removes the requirement to prioritize hospitals in the same region. It also changes the timeline requirements, so hospitals must show they can start using the positions within two years and fill them within five years, instead of just filling them within three years.
