Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act of 2026

This bill changes and expands a program that helps teachers pay off their student loans. Right now, certain teachers who work full-time for five years in a row at low-income schools can get up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness. The bill would open up the program to more people, including early childhood educators and school leaders at high-need schools, and would cover more types of loans, like Parent PLUS Loans. It would also have the Department of Education make monthly loan payments for qualifying educators while they work, provide full loan forgiveness after five years of service (which no longer have to be five years in a row), and notify borrowers about the changes.
