SCALE Biology Act

This bill sets up a new laboratory program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) focused on biometrology, which is the science of measuring living organisms. The program is meant to help improve biological data, support new inventions, and make sure biological technologies are developed safely and responsibly. The bill also expands NIST's work in this area by having it create common definitions for related fields, support outside research, identify where new technical standards are needed, and help build specialized facilities for engineering biology in partnership with industry. Additionally, NIST is authorized to conduct research that helps develop voluntary standards and best practices for fields like biotechnology and biomanufacturing.
