SHARKED Act of 2025

This bill requires the Department of Commerce to create a task force focused on the problem of shark depredation, which is when sharks eat fish off of fishing lines before fishers can reel them in. The task force would work on improving communication between fishing managers and shark researchers, figuring out research priorities, recommending strategies to deal with the problem, and creating educational materials. The group must include representatives from regional fishing councils, marine fisheries commissions, coastal state wildlife agencies, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and researchers with relevant knowledge. The task force must report its findings to Congress every two years and will end seven years after it is set up.
