First Step Implementation Act of 2025

This bill makes changes to federal sentencing rules, mainly for drug crimes and crimes committed by young people. It allows some people sentenced for drug offenses before December 21, 2018, to benefit from lower mandatory minimum sentences that were passed later. It also lets courts reduce sentences for people who committed crimes as juveniles and have already served at least 20 years, and it creates a way to seal or erase certain records of nonviolent crimes committed by minors. Additionally, the bill requires the Department of Justice to set up rules making sure that background check records used for jobs are released quickly and are accurate.
