Next Generation 9–1–1 Act

This bill creates a grant program to help state, tribal, and territorial governments set up and maintain modern 9-1-1 systems that work over the internet instead of old telephone networks. These newer systems can do things older ones cannot, like pinpoint locations more accurately and receive texts and multimedia messages. The grant money, provided through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, can also be used for public outreach, cybersecurity protection, and training. The bill also requires the creation of an advisory board to guide the program and a cybersecurity center to help governments share security information related to these updated 9-1-1 systems.
