EFIN Verification Act of 2026

This bill requires the IRS to check that an electronic filing identification number (EFIN) — a special number given to people or businesses allowed to file tax returns for others — is valid and active before any tax return can be filed electronically. The IRS would need to create a system that can check these numbers in real time. EFINs would need to be verified before they are first used and again at regular intervals set by the IRS. Other approved groups, like software companies or state agencies, could also help with the verification process.
