High-Capacity Grid Act

This bill says that public electric utilities must use the most advanced and efficient type of power line wire available when building new or upgrading existing long-distance power lines, if they want to pass those costs on to customers through their electric bills. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission would automatically consider it a smart decision to use these top-performing wires and would assume it is not a smart decision to use lesser ones. The best wire is defined as one that carries the most electricity possible, wastes the least energy, and resists sagging due to heat. The rule applies to both brand-new power lines and projects that change, upgrade, or replace existing ones.
