Kids Online Safety Act

This bill requires social media platforms, video games, messaging apps, and video streaming services that are used by people under 17 to take steps to protect young users. These platforms must use reasonable care to prevent harm to minors, such as mental health problems and severe harassment, and must provide tools like privacy settings that parents can access and ways to report harm. The bill also bans companies from doing market research on children under 13 and requires parental permission for research on kids under 17. Additionally, platforms that use algorithms to personalize what users see must tell users about it and let them switch to a version that doesn't use their personal data, with enforcement handled by the Federal Trade Commission and state authorities.
