ORBITS Act of 2025

This bill deals with cleaning up space junk, which is old, human-made objects floating in orbit that can damage working satellites and other space activities. It requires the Department of Commerce to keep a list of dangerous debris that could be cleaned up, and it directs NASA to run a project where companies or organizations compete to develop technology that can remove that debris from orbit. The bill also calls for updating the government's rules for preventing new space junk, taking into account things like large groups of satellites, and it requires Commerce to help develop standards for coordinating traffic in space. NASA and other agencies would also be allowed to hire outside services to help clean up orbital debris.
