21st Century Dyslexia Act

This bill changes how dyslexia is handled in the main federal law for educating children with disabilities. Right now, dyslexia is grouped under a broader category called "specific learning disability," but this bill would pull it out and give it its own separate definition. That definition describes dyslexia as an unexpected difficulty in reading, usually caused by trouble processing the individual sounds in spoken language, even though the person is smart enough to read much better. The bill also requires schools and agencies to make sure children from low-income families, families with low socioeconomic status, and children with limited English skills have equal access to disability services and accommodations.
