Making America's Food Safer Act

This bill gives the FDA more power to deal with unsafe food coming into the country. If an imported food item is rejected because it breaks the law and could seriously harm people's health, the FDA can order it to be destroyed instead of being sent back to another country, though the owner gets a chance to respond first. The bill also lets the FDA share food safety information, like details about outbreaks and recalls, with state, local, tribal, and territorial governments. Finally, it opens up a voluntary inspection program to food facilities inside the United States that was previously only available to foreign facilities, and it lets the FDA use the results of those inspections to decide where to focus its safety efforts.
