Safe Schools Improvement Act

This bill would require states to have their local school districts create rules to prevent and ban bullying and harassment of students in elementary and secondary schools. These rules must specifically address bullying based on race, color, national origin, disability, religion, or sex, which includes sexual orientation, gender identity, and intersex traits. School districts would also need to notify students and parents each year about what behavior is prohibited, offer a process for filing complaints, and share public data on how often bullying and harassment happen. The Department of Education would be required to evaluate anti-bullying programs every two years, and a national statistics center would collect data from states on how frequently this prohibited behavior occurs.
