Public Health Improvement Act

This bill limits what the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can do. It removes HHS's ability to take whatever steps it thinks are needed to stop the spread of contagious diseases and focuses the CDC only on contagious diseases, taking away its work on things like injuries, workplace hazards, and environmental health. The bill also says Congress, not HHS, would have to approve any renewal of a public health emergency and sets a 12-year limit on how long the heads of the CDC and the National Institutes of Health can serve. It also moves eight offices from the CDC to the NIH and changes who gets to pick members of a key CDC advisory committee.
